Book a Fontainhas Walking Tour A Walk Through History Known as the Latin Quarter of Goa, this heritage neighborhood dates back to the late 18th century and beautifully preserves Goa’s deep Portuguese architectural and cultural influences. The name Fontainhas comes from the Portuguese word “little fountain”, inspired by a natural spring called Fonte Phoenix, located at the foot of Altinho Hill. Discovered around 1770, this spring was so significant that it lent its name to the entire neighborhood — a symbol of life and continuity that still exists today. The origins of Fontainhas trace back to António João de Sequeira, affectionately known as Mossmikar, a wealthy Goan merchant who made his fortune in Mozambique. Upon returning home, he purchased land between Ourem Creek and Altinho Hill — then a coconut plantation — and began developing the area. Over time, the land passed through Carmelite nuns and eventually came under Portuguese administration as Old Goa declined due to a plague. This shift led to Panjim’s rise as the new capital, transforming Fontainhas into a flourishing settlement of officials, artists, and traders. Today, Fontainhas is recognized as a notified heritage zone, celebrated for its pastel-hued villas, balconied façades, and European-style streetscapes. The neighborhood still honors its traditions — including the annual repainting of houses after the monsoon, a practice that keeps the quarter alive in color and spirit. For travelers seeking heritage, culture, and authenticity, a heritage walk through Fontainhas is one of the most enriching things to do in Goa — a journey that connects you not just to architecture, but to the soul of the city itself.
