Why This Experience Is Special
Unlike a regular sightseeing boat ride, this experience is designed for travellers who want to slow down and truly appreciate Goa’s remarkable biodiversity.
Your guide isn’t simply navigating the boat, they’re interpreting the landscape, identifying bird calls, explaining the importance of mangrove forests and helping you notice wildlife that most visitors would simply pass by.

FAQ Section
Our preferred location is the River Mandovi backwaters near the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, one of Goa's richest mangrove ecosystems for birdwatching and estuarine wildlife. Depending on where you're staying and the best conditions for wildlife sightings, we may also conduct the experience along the Chapora, Zuari or Sal rivers, or in Nerul, Agonda or Assolna. We choose the location that offers the best combination of convenience and a rewarding nature experience.
The overall experience lasts 1 Hour by boat, with an optional additional hour available at an extra cost. Every trip is accompanied by an experienced naturalist who helps identify birds, wildlife and the unique mangrove ecosystem.
Your experience includes:
- Private boat ride through the mangroves
- Experienced naturalist guide
- Binoculars for birdwatching
- Drinking water
- Life jackets for all guests
- All applicable entry fees and permits
Everything is taken care of, so you can simply relax and enjoy one of Goa's most peaceful wildlife experiences.
Goa's mangrove ecosystems are home to an incredible variety of resident and migratory bird species, making every trip unique. Some of the birds most commonly spotted during the experience include:
- Brahminy Kite
- Kingfishers
- Cormorants
- Egrets
- Pond Herons
- Sandpipers
- Lesser Adjutant Storks (seasonal)
- Other resident and migratory wetland birds
The exact species you'll encounter depends on the season, tides and weather conditions. Every outing offers something different, which is part of the excitement of birdwatching.
In addition to birds, there's a good chance of spotting marsh crocodiles, particularly during low tide when they are often seen basking along the riverbanks. While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, crocodiles are seen on many trips throughout the year.
Dolphins are not typically found in these mangrove habitats, so this experience is focused on birdlife, mangrove ecology and estuarine wildlife rather than marine mammals.
Not at all. This experience is designed to be enjoyable for absolute beginners, while still offering plenty to appreciate for experienced birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts.
An experienced naturalist accompanies every trip, helping you identify different bird species, understand their behaviour and learn about the unique mangrove ecosystem. Whether you're spotting your very first kingfisher or hoping to add a new species to your bird list, the experience is tailored to your level of interest.
We provide binoculars for all guests, but if you have your own binoculars or camera with a telephoto lens, you're welcome to bring them along for an even better birdwatching experience.
We recommend wearing comfortable, lightweight clothing, preferably with full sleeves and full-length trousers, as there may be insects around the mangroves. Dressing comfortably will help you enjoy the experience, especially during the warmer parts of the day.
Before you head out, we suggest bringing:
- A hat or cap
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Sunglasses (optional)
- Your camera or smartphone for photography
- Your own binoculars if you prefer using them (binoculars are also provided)
Footwear is entirely up to you, as there is no trekking involved and guests spend most of the experience on the boat.
Photography is highly encouraged, so don't forget your camera if you enjoy capturing birds, wildlife and Goa's beautiful backwaters.
All our Mangrove Birding experiences are conducted on a private boat, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful surroundings at your own pace. Whether you're travelling as a couple, family or small group, you'll have the boat exclusively for your booking.
The boat can accommodate up to 10 guests, making it ideal for families, friends and private nature outings.
The experience operates in light rain or drizzle, as the boat is equipped with a covered seating area to keep guests comfortable.
However, if the government suspends boat operations due to severe weather, such as a Red Alert, the experience will be cancelled for safety reasons. In such cases, you can choose to reschedule your booking or receive a full refund.
Your safety is always our highest priority.
Yes, this experience is family-friendly and is a wonderful way to introduce children to Goa's rich birdlife and mangrove ecosystem.
Senior citizens are also welcome, provided they are comfortable getting in and out of the boat independently or with assistance. As boarding involves stepping onto the boat from the jetty, we recommend that guests with mobility concerns contact us before booking so we can advise on suitability.
Absolutely. The Mangrove Birding experience is offered exclusively as a private experience, making it perfect for couples, families and small groups.
The boat accommodates up to 10 guests, allowing everyone to enjoy a relaxed and personalised wildlife experience without sharing the boat with other visitors.
Birdwatching is rewarding throughout the year, with resident species regularly seen in Goa's mangrove ecosystems.
For the best birdwatching opportunities, we recommend visiting between November and February, when migratory birds arrive and bird activity is at its peak.
For the best chance of spotting wildlife, we also recommend early morning or late afternoon departures, when birds are generally more active and the weather is cooler.
A guided experience offers far more than just a boat ride. Our experienced naturalist helps you identify birds and wildlife, explains the importance of Goa's mangrove ecosystem, and shares fascinating insights into the behaviour of different species.
You'll also benefit from local knowledge of the best locations and timings for wildlife sightings, making your outing more rewarding than exploring independently. Whether you're a first-time birdwatcher or a seasoned nature enthusiast, having a knowledgeable guide transforms the experience into an engaging and educational journey.
Transport is not included. If required, we can arrange transport for you at an additional cost.
